Scope and Contents
The George and Ichiyo 'Pat' Nakaya digital photograph collection contains 28 digitized items of black-and-white photographs documenting the Nayaka family from the 1940s to 1960s. Folder 1 contains images of George and Pat Nakaya and their children between 1942 and 1945, when they were imprisoned in the Granada War Relocation Center, or Camp Amache. Folder 2 contains 9 black-and-white group photographs of congregants posing outside of the Japanese Church of Christ in Salt Lake City, Utah, taken mostly on Easter Sunday and dating from the 1950s and 1960s.

Biographical Note
Ichiroji “George” Nakaya (1911-2003) was born on January 20, 1911, in Hiroshima, Japan. He trained as a carpenter in Japan. George Nakaya immigrated to the United States at the age of eighteen. On January 31, 1937, he married Ichiyo “Pat” Hayashi (1917-2009). Pat was born on June 24, 1917, in Gardena, California, to Jinzo Hayashi and Chino Kinoshita. Together, George and Pat had five children. The Nakaya family was imprisoned in Camp Amache in Granada, Colorado, for three years during World War II. Upon their release, they briefly lived in Idaho before settling in Salt Lake City, Utah. There, Pat worked as a seamstress while George worked as a cook for various restaurants, including the Utah Café and the Ramada Inn. They were members of the Japanese Church of Christ in Salt Lake City. Upon their retirement, George and Pat moved to West Valley City, Utah. In their retirement, they pursued traveling, fishing, gardening, and family activities. George Nakaya died on June 18, 2003. Pat Nakaya died on August 14, 2009.
