Scope and Contents

The David Aoki digital photograph collection contains 11 digital-only photographs. The collection contains 1 black-and-white photograph of Aoki's father, Riichi Aoki, and his brothers, dating from 1913. The remainder of the collection consists of 9 black-and-white and color images of the Ogden Judo Dojo team and 1 color photograph of Mitsuhisa Kato and Kay Yonetani, spanning from the 1950s to approximately the 1990s.

Biographical Note

David Aoki was born on May 10, 1921 in Honeywille, Utah to Riichi and Kumano Akagi Aoki. David Aoki attended Honeyville Elementary School and Box Elder High School; he graduated in 1939. In 1940, Aoki moved to Delano, California for work; however, he was injured in an industrial accident. The same year, he enrolled in Marinello Cosmetology College in Los Angeles, California. In 1942, Aoki returned to Utah, where he worked transporting produce. In 1944, Aoki moved to Denver, Colorado, and enrolled in State Barber College. In March 1945, returning to Utah, Aoki opened Dave’s Barber Shop in Ogden. He married Lily Shina (1920-2011) on July 19, 1945; together, they had one son. Aoki owned and operated Dave's Barber Shop until his retirement in 1989. David Aoki died on April 1, 2021 in Layton, Utah.
