Biographical Note
Wesley Walter Deist (1923-2008) was born on September 20, 1923, and was raised in Bonners Ferry, Idaho. Following high school, Deist attended Gonzaga University and the University of Idaho before enlisting in the United States military during World War II in a Special Operations unit that was a precursor to the Navy SEALs. Wes married Lenna Hooker in 1944. In the 1950s, Wes and his family moved to Idaho Falls, Idaho, where they owned and operated a sporting goods store; Wes also operated an insurance agency. Because of his involvement in local business, Deist served on the Idaho Falls City Council, where he helped establish a greenbelt along the Snake River as well as city parks. Deist was involved in the ski culture near Idaho Falls, coaching the KIFI ski team and teaching at Kelly Canyon Ski Resort from its founding in 1967 until 2006, when he was 82. He was also a member of the United States Ski Association (USSA) Intermountain Division, serving as its president in 1970. He died at the age of 84 in 2008.
