Biographical Note

Albert F. “Sunny” Korfanta was born in Rock Springs, Wyoming in 1915. He attended college in Colorado, where he studied pharmacy; Korfanta settled in Pinedale, Wyoming, where he and his wife, Fran "Fanny" Korfanta, opened a drug store. The Korfantas were outdoor sport and ski enthusiasts.

In 1930, the United States Forest Service and the Pinedale Commercial Club partnered to establish the Surveyor Park Ski Area (later renamed White Pine Ski Area), which opened on January 5, 1940. Sunny and Fanny Korfanta were asked to serve as volunteer managers of the ski area. The park closed in 1943 as a result of World War II and reopened in 1946. Sunny Korfanta taught youth skiers at Surveyor Park. In the 1960s, Korfanta served as president of the Intermountain Ski Association; later, he represented the association at the United States Ski Association. He was inducted into the Intermountain Ski Association Hall of Fame in 2008 as a ski pioneer. In addition to his contributions developing the ski industry in Wyoming, Korfanta served as coach for the Pinedale High School basketball, football, and track teams, and coached girls’ basketball in the 1940s.
