Historical Note

Richard “Dick” Bench began working at Park City West ski resort the year that it opened, in 1968, as a ski patroller. He became a ski instructor in 1990, and continued to work at the resort into the 2010s. In 1975, the resort’s name was changed to “ParkWest” to distinguish it from the Park City Resort. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, ParkWest was known as a party resort for skilled skiers. In 1995, it was sold and renamed to “Wolf Mountain” and opened its slopes to snowboarders, the first of Park City’s resorts to do so. In 1997, it was purchased by the American Skiing Company, who renamed again to “The Canyons” and set out to expand and modernize the resort. In 2014, the resort was purchased by Vail Resorts and in 2015 was merged with other Park City ski resorts to form one large Park City Resort.
