Scope and Contents

The The Cal and Dodie McPhie digital photograph collection contains 20 digitaly-only black-and-white and color photographs and news clippings dating from approximately the 1940s to 2000s. The collection contains images of Cal McPhie while serving in the United States Navy during World War II; black-and-white photographs of Cal and Dodie skiing with unidentified individuals from the 1950s and 1960s; articles from newspapers about Cal's military service and career in the ski industry; and color images of Cal and Dodie McPhie at events in the 2000s.

Biographical Note

Calvin “Cal” McPhie (1923-2014) was born on September 10, 1923 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Joseph Hyrum and Ruby Larsen McPhie. He attended West High School. Cal McPhie served in World War II in the United States Navy. The ship that Cal served on, the USS Finback, was involved in the rescue of future United States president George H.W. Bush. Cal McPhie was involved in the creation for a Submarine Memorial in Utah. After returning from the war, Cal began working at the Alta Ski Area; he later became a welder with a specialty in repairing cranes.

Doris “Dodie” McPhie (1930-2018) was born on April 17, 1930 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Tim O. and Gladys Smith Butters. She graduated from East High and from the University of Utah with a BS in Nursing. Dodie had benefitted from lung surgery as a teenager, an experience that inspired her to pursue a career in medicine. She worked as a nurse at LDS Hospital in various positions throughout her career.

Cal and Dodie married one another on October 20, 1950. Both Cal and Dodie were active in outdoor activities and sports, particularly skiing. In 1950, Cal and Dodie purchased the Little Mountain Ski area in Emigration Canyon; they became the first ski area to offer night skiing. They operated the ski area until 1968, when Little Mountain was destroyed by a fire. Beginning in 1968, Cal began operating Gorgoza, a winter resort in Parleys Canyon that offered ice skating, tobogganing, and tubing in addition to skiing. Cal operated Gorgoza until 1972. Cal and Dodie were active in the Intermountain Ski Association. In 2006, Cal McPhie was honored at the Alf Engen Ski Museum. Cal McPhie died on June 8, 2014. Dodie McPhie died on February 6, 2018.

Abstract

Cal McPhie (1923-2014) was a World War II veteran who, along with his wife Dodie McPhie (1930-2018), operated Utah ski areas from 1950 to the 1970s. This collection contains digital images of Cal in the United States Navy, Cal and Dodie skiing, and scans of news articles about Cal McPhie's military service and work in the ski industry dating from the 1940s to the 2000s.
