Scope and Contents

The Chip Ward photograph collection consists of 1 box containing 2 color aerial snapshots of water and islands, labeled “Magcorp” and dating from 1997-1999. Magcorp owned a factory and industrial site on the edget of the Great Salt Lake used for producing magnesium metal that was the subject of a federal lawsuit in the late 1990s for environmental infractions; the site is now onwed by U.S. Magnesium.

Biographical Note

Chip Ward was raised in New Jersey and attained his BA from Tufts University in 1971. From 1974 to 1978, Chip and his wife Linda moved to Utah to operate the Sleeping Rainbow Guest Ranch in Capitol Reef National Park. In 1978, when the owners of the ranch transferred it to the National Park Service, the Wards moved to Grantsville, Utah, where Chip began organizing politically against environmental polluters. A career librarian, Ward operated bookmobiles in rural Utah before serving as Deputy Director of the Salt Lake Public Library from 2000 to 2007, when Ward retired. Ward is the co-founder of West Desert HEAL, co-founder of Families Against Incinerator Risk (FAIR), co-founder of Citizens Against Chlorine Contamination, and co-founder of HEAL Utah and is currently on the advisory board. Ward is known for his nonfiction writing about the environment, particularly the impact of nuclear weapon testing and power on Utah’s ecology. His works include Canaries on the Rim: Living Downwind in the West (1999), Hope's Horizon: Three Visions for Healing the American Land (2004), and Dance, Don’t Drive: Resilient Thinking for Turbulent Times, (2012).
