Biographical Note
Vern Levi Openshaw was born on November 9, 1913 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Vernon Openshaw and Amy Schaelling Openshaw Emmertson. His father, Vernon Openshaw, died in a mining accident before Vern was born and his mother remarried to carpenter Alva Emmertson. Vern Openshaw graduated from East High School in Salt Lake City. He worked in the grocery business as a produce manager for Success Markets and Grand Central Stores. On April 25, 1938, he married Ruth Georgena Floyd (1918-1969). Vern Openshaw later remarried to Dianne Thornley (1942-2013); this marriage ended in divorce.
At some point, Vern Openshaw left the grocery business to pursue a career in architecture. He designed homes in Salt Lake City under the business name Homes of Charm. Openshaw worked with developers to design homes in the Shadow Mountain Estates, Oakhills, and Arlington Hills subdivisions. Openshaw was a member of the Salt Lake Kiwanis Club and the Bonneville Knife and Fork Club and was a supporter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
