Biographical Note
Hachiro “Huch” Paul Aoki (1927-2018) was born on August 9, 1927 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Peter Chojiro and Toyo Mayebayashi Aoki. He served in the United States Army in the Mountain and Cold Weather Training Command division from 1951 to 1953. Barbara Sumiko Okuda Aoki (1922-1993) was born on October 28, 1922, in Clearfield, Utah to Harugo and Kumaye Okuda. She was active in the Japanese American Citizens League, Mount Olympus Chapter. Huch Aoki and Barbara Okuda married on March 12, 1954. Together, the couple had three children: Paula, Dawn, and Bruce.
Huch and Barbara were lifelong participants in sports, particularly outdoor sports. Barbara was a golfer and bowler and member of the Ladies 9-Holders and the Nisei Women’s Bowling League. She began skiing in 1951, and skied every season until her death. Huch participated in many sports, including golf, biking, trap shooting, duathlon, and triathlon in the Huntsman World Senior Games for 32 years; in 2009, he was inducted into their Hall of Fame. Barbara and Huch passed their love of sports to their children: their daughters Paula and Dawn both became triathletes. Barbara Aoki died in 1993 and Huch Aoki died in 2018.
