Historical Note
SOCOTWA, an acronym for South Cottonwood Ward in Murray, Utah, is a non-profit organization specializing in river rafting. SOCOTWA originated with the Eagles Club of the South Cottonwood Ward in Salt Lake City around 1948. Scouts were taken on river trips and to places of interest around Utah. Popularity of these trips by scouts and others expanded the operation of SOCOTWA and it became a full-fledged corporation in 1953, an effort led by Dale Labrum and Merlin Shaw. SOCOTWA had its peak years of activity in the 1950s. A series of accidents, in combination with the completion of the Glen Canyon dam in 1963, led the group to decrease its activities, though it did not disband, continuing to offer occasional river running trips into the twenty-first century.
