Scope and Contents

The collection of Lou Lorenz consists of one color print of Mr. Lorenz and thirty black and white 35mm transparencies of older prints, depicting skiing in the United States from 1891 through 1948. It is not known how Mr. Lorenz obtained these transparencies. Lou Lorenz was active in teaching skiing, and the administration of professional ski instruction for more than fifty years. He started skiing in 1946, and began teaching skiing for the Deseret News ski school in 1950. In 1953, he moved to Alta to teach there, and obtained certification from the Intermountain Ski Instructors Association in 1956. He stayed at Alta Ski Resort until 1963, and was the director of the ski school at Little Mountain during that time. He later co-founded the Greater Salt Lake Ski School, which contracted ski instruction at Solitude Ski Resort and Gorgoza ski area. He was on the board of the Intermountain Ski Instructors Association for 17 years, and served as its president, chairman, and certification committee during that period. In 1971, he was named a lifetime member of the Professional Ski Instructors Association, and in 1996 was inducted into the PSIA Hall of Fame. He was a charter member of the Utah Ski Archives board. Mr. Lorenz passed away on September 14,2003.

Biographical Note

Lou Lorenz (1924 - 2003)

Lou was an innovator, motivator and administrator in the art and science of ski instruction for 48 years. Whether addressing a group of beginners at slope-side or chairing a ski instructor certification committee, Lou’s quiet leadership was relevant and respected. He started skiing in 1946 and first taught skiing in 1950 with the Deseret News Ski School.

He began his professional ski instruction career at Alta in 1953 and became a fully-certified instructor in 1956. He taught at Alta and at Little Mountain for 10 years and was co-founder of the Greater Salt Lake Ski School, which offered instruction at Solitude Ski Area and Gorgoza Ski Area. He joined the Park City Resort Ski School in 1970, where he was the supervisor of many learn-to-ski programs for both children and adults, and retired from instruction in 1998.

Lou served on the Intermountain Ski Instructors Association (ISIA) Board of Directors for 17 years, including three as its president and ten on its certification committee. Lou was honored with a lifetime membership in the Professional Ski Instructors of America-Intermountain Division and became a member of its Hall of Fame in 1996. He was a charter member of the University of Utah J. Willard Marriott Library Ski Archives Advisory Board and of the Alf Engen Ski Museum Foundation Board of Trustees.

Lou was inducted into the Intermountain Ski Hall of Fame in 2005. The above biograpical note is from that event.
