This collection contains slides and photographs of the River Guides in Glen Canyon during the 1950s and 1960s. The photographs and slides are in good condition, and the majority are labeled-all were numbered and the original order was maintained, but this means that there are sometimes missing numbers-these items were not donated, so those numberes were skipped when processing the colleciton.

Biographical / Historical

Mary Gold Armstrong Milligan (1909-2004) was born August 26, 1909 in Salt Lake City, Utah; the first child of Albert Bird and Mary Elizabeth (Gold) Armstrong. She attended schools in Salt Lake and graduated from West High. She married and raised five children (Marilyn, Rod, Gordon, Arlyne, and Linda)

She was involved in Primary and Relief Society for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Mary enjoyed many years of white water rafting and jeep trips as a member of SOCOTWA. She worked for many years as a clerk for Federal Housing Administration.

When Mary retired in 1974 she went to work for Cultural Homestay International (CHI) Tours.

Mary passed away October, 24, 2004.

Abstract

The Mary Armstrong Milligan photograph collection consists of slides and photographs of river trips in Glen Canyon during the 1950s and 1960s. Mary A. Milligan was part of the crew on several SOCOTWA river trips in the late 1950s and early 1960s. SOCOTWA was an organization founded in the South Cottonwood Ward, Salt Lake County, that organized recreational and educational field trips for LDS groups, Boy Scouts, etc., for many decades.
