Biographical / Historical

Ted Capener had a distinguished career as a broadcaster which began in 1958 at KSL Radio in Salt Lake City. He served as chief of the Washington News Bureau for Bonneville for more than nine years, and later was a board chairman for PBS. In addition to being recognized with numerous awards for journalism, Capener also served as Vice President for University Relations at the University of Utah from 1985 to 1999. Ted Capener was inducted into the Utah Broadcasters Association’s Hall of Fame in June 2005. Capener served as Vice President for University Relations at the University of Utah from 1985-1999. He has a long and distinguished career in broadcasting, which began in 1958 with Bonneville International Corp’s KSL Radio in Salt Lake City. Capener also served for more than nine years as chief of the Washington News Bureau for Bonneville. He covered congressional delegations from eight states, including Utah, and six national political conventions. While in Washington, he was a member of the Board of the Congressional Correspondents Association and the Chairman of the Freedom of Information Committee for the Radio and Television News Directors Association. Capener is a former board chairman of PBS and a member of the KUED Friend’s Board of Directors. Capener has served as a chairman of the Utah State Board of Education’s Commission on Educational Excellence, and chairman of KUED’s advisory board. He is a past president of the Utah Chapter of Society of Professional Journalists, and in 1966 received the Quintus C. Wilson Sigma Delta Chi Achievement Awards as the outstanding alumnus of the University of Utah’s journalism department.
