Biographical / Historical
The Fort Lewis army post was originally located in Pagosa Springs, Colorado in 1878. In 1880, the military fort relocated to Hesperus, Colorado. Shortly after, Fort Lewis was decommissioned and converted into an off-reservation boarding school for Native students.
