Biographical Note
Waldo Park Midgley (1888-1986) was born on January 21, 1922 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Joshua Hough and Annie Alexander Park Midgley. He married Mary Lucille van Schoonhoven on in 1914. Together, the couple had two children and later divorced. In 1938 he remarried Eleanor Sherrod Midgley.
Midgley was a painter who specialized in watercolors and oils. Although born in Salt Lake City, Midgley spent most of his career in New York City. He moved to New York City in 1907 and soon thereafter met painters known at the time as The Eight and soon after known as the Ashcan School; Midgley was particularly influenced by his mentor, Robert Henri. In addition to painting, Midgley taught at the Cavanaugh School of Art, the Jean Morgan School of Art, and the Pratt Institute. He died on May 25, 1986.
