Historical Note
Sugar House is a residential and commercial neighborhood in Salt Lake City, Utah that is considered one of the city's oldest neighborhoods. Though the name is officially two words, it is often combined into "Sugarhouse." The neighborhood was established in 1853. It was named after the sugar beet factory of the Deseret Manufacturing Company that was established in the area. It was the location of Sugar House Prison (Utah Territorial Penitentiary), Utah's first state prison, from 1855 until 1951; the site of the prison was transformed into a city park and given in part to the Highland High School after its closure in 1951. By the early twentieth century, Sugar House was known as a retail destination for furniture due to the corner of 1100 East and 21000 South, which was the site of three furniture stores. The commercial character of the neighborhood has been continually fostered: in 1990, the Sugar House shopping center was completed, and in 1998, an adjacent shopping area, The Commons, was completed. Sugar House is also the location of Westminster College.
