Biographical Note
Walter Gordon Clark (1876-1950) was born on October 23, 1876 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Thomas A. and Eunice Wright Clark. He studied mining and engineering at the University of Utah, the University of California, Columbia University, and the Kaiser Wilhelm university in Berlin, Germany. Between 1900 and 1910, he co-founded Kilbourne and Clark in Seattle, Washington, with E.C. Kilbourne, an engineering firm that provided consulting services for Eastern electrical companies. Clark worked primarily in New York City, building contracts with companies for western expansion of the radio telegraph. Throughout his work as a consulting engineer, Clark contributed to engineering work on the Colorado river for General George W. Goethals as well as design for the dams on the Panama Canal. He later established a steel production company, Clarkiron Incorporated, in California. Clarkâs obituaries credit him with the invention of the pulmotor and the Clark iron process for iron reduction. Clark died on December 18, 1950, in Los Angeles, California.
