Scope and Contents

The Wesley Pratt Larsen photograph collection consists of 3 boxes of images related to Larsen's research into Utah and Native American history and career as a biologist and educator. The collection contains black-and-white photographs and negatives of buildings and places in Utah, particularly Summit, Beaver, and Toquerville; color photographs related to the structures and culture of the Ancestral Puebloans, or Anasazi, particularly petroglyphs and pictographs; and color slides of unidentified people and related to Larsen's work as a biologist. Many of the photographs were taken by Larsen and include typewritten descriptions written by him. Some of the images are copy prints of originals held by the Utah State Historical Society. The collection spans 1960 to 20000, with most of the photographs and negatives dating from the 19990s.

Biographical Note

Wesley Pratt Larsen (1916-2004) was born on July 29, 1916 in Kimberly, Idaho to Charles E. and Belinda Pratt Larsen. Larsen earned a Ph.D. from the University of Utah in 1960 in the subject area of biology. He completed some graduate studies at Stanford University of California Berkeley. Larsen was the associate program director for the National Science Foundation. His research projects also were conducted for the Atomic Energy Commission for radiation biology and for Columbia University, where Larsen worked as a field observer for a rural education project. He taught at Southern Utah University and the College of Eastern Utah. Over the course of his career, Larsen wrote many articles and books about the history of southern Utah. He died on April 29, 2004.
