Biographical Note

Eugene “Gene” Grant Pack I (1902-1981) was born on May 30, 1902, to Frederick J. and Sadie Grant Pack. Frederick Pack was head of the University of Utah’s Department of Geology, and as a teenager and young man Eugene offered tours of the geology of Southern Utah. Pack attended the University of Utah, following his father in the study of geology. On September 21, 1927, Eugene married Lucile Clara Payne; together, the couple had two children. On May 20, 1950, he married Kathryne Fisher.

As a youth, Gene Pack had owned an amateur radio transmitter, and after graduating from college, he went to work as a radio and sound engineer. Pack began his career at station KLO in Ogden, Utah, and soon after his brother, Alvin G. Pack, joined him at the radio station as a broadcaster; Alvin led a pioneering career as a radio and television broadcaster. From 1929 until 1949, Pack worked as Chief Engineer at Koulian Studios Limited (KSL) Radio, overseeing great expansion of the station during his 20 years in the role. In 1932, he oversaw the installation of a 50-kilowatt Western Electric transmitter. In 1936, Pack oversaw the construction of new studios with Western E#lectric speech input equipment. These expansions allowed KSL to become a clear channel station. In about 1935, Pack built a special transmitter in the Bonneville Salt Flats to allow for the broadcasting of the speed runs. During World War II, he achieved the rank of Colonel in the United States Army Signal Corps. In 1951, Pack left KSL to establish the Gene Pack Radio Clinic, where he developed and built radio and stereo systems. Gene Pack retired in 1980 and died on October 1, 1981.
