Biographical Note
Joseph W. McMurrin (1858-1932) was born on October 5, 1858 in Tooele, Utah Territory to Joseph McMurrin and Margaret Leaning. He was raised primarily in Salt Lake City, Utah. He married Mary Ellen Hunter on April 1, 1880; together, the couple had seven children. He worked on the railroad, hauling freight to mining camps and building a portion of the Oregon Short Line Railroad through Wyoming. McMurrin was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and a general authority. He was sustained as one of the First Council of the Seventy on 1897 and ordained a member of the Council in 1898. He served as president of the California Mission of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints from 1919 until his death in October 1932.
