Biographical Note
Frank Emil Schefski (1872-1946) was born on December 29, 1872 in New York City, New York to Ferdinand and Justina Mangel. The family moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1875. At some point the family shortened their name to Schefsi. Frank married Jeannette Milesa Sinclair on June 13, 1900. Schefski was an athlete, specializing in bicycle racing and marksmanship. He was a sponsor of the Salt Palace bicycle racetrack and competed nationally as a bicycle racer.
After retiring from competition, Schefski worked as sports editor for the Salt Lake Tribune. Schefski was active in the Utah Republican Party; in 1917, he was named chief clerk to Salt Lake City mayor W. Mont Ferry. In the 1920s, Schefski began reporting on sports for The Citizen. Formerly known as Goodwin’s Weekly: A Thinking Paper for Thinking People, the name was changed after the death of its founder, Charles Carroll Goodwin, in 1917. Schefski wrote primarily about fishing and hunting. By 1924, he was working as editor for the publication, and by 1926 he had taken over as business manager and publisher of The Citizen. The newspaper ceased publication in 1929. Frank Emil Schefski died on November 9, 1946.
