Biographical Sketch

Dr. Jack Wilson Carlson was born in Salt Lake City, Utah in 1933. He was married to Renee Payott Carson for over 40 years. He received his MBA from the University of Utah and served as president of the student body. From 1956 to 1966, he served in the Air Force, where he was a fighter pilot. He received a master's degree in public administration and a doctorate in economics from Harvard University while serving in the Air Force. He settled in the Washington area in 1965. From 1968 to 1974, he was assistant director of the Office of Management and Budget. Before that, he had served as senior economist on the Council of Economic Advisers. From 1974 to 1976, Dr. Carlson was assistant secretary of interior for energy and minerals, then in 1976 was an unsuccessful candidate for the Republican nomination for the Senate from Utah. He was vice president and chief economist of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce from 1976 to 1979, then until 1986 served as vice president and chief executive officer of the National Association of Realtors. In 1988, he served briefly as executive director of the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), then did economic consulting. Dr. Carson died from a heart attack 7 December 1992.
