Scope and Contents

The American Forensic Association (AFA) photograph collection consists of materials documenting the history of the AFA, a professional association of forensics educators. Among the AFA's many functions, the most important is the management of two major forensic events; the National Debate Tournament and the National Individual Events Tournament.

Historical Note

The American Forensic Association (AFA) was started in December 1949 by a group of educators as a "professional association of teachers who seek to empower students through argument and advocacy." The AFA is the presentor of both the National Debate Tournament and the National Individual Events Tournament, as well as being the publisher of The Journal of the American Forensic Association (JAFA) (which in 1988 was renamed Argumentation and Advocacy: The Journal of the American Forensic Association.
