Desert Magazine photograph collection
Collection
Identifier: P1079
Scope and Contents
The photographs in this collection were for the most part used as illustrations in articles in the magazine. In most instances, a photocopy of the page on which the photograph appeared in he magazine is included with the photo, thus giving not only identification of the individual image but provenance for how the image was used. Some of the photographs are by Henderson but some are from other sources, and for those images identified by photographer, copyright restrictions apply. Permission must be obtained before any use of these photographs. After some deliberation, it was decided to arrange the images alphabetically by subject. Where a group of images belong to a specific article, they are found together in a single folder; but others are in their subject groupings. The symbol {**} indicates that a photocopied page is found in the folder which gives more information about how and sometimes when the photograph was used in the magazine. Photographs with captions will appear in quotes ("__"), and if a photographer is listed on the back of the photograph, the name will appear with the entry in brackets, i.e. [N.P.S. photo], but addresses and other personal information will not be included. If there is no caption but the subject of the photograph is common knowledge [i.e., Delicate Arch], this will be included as well. In some cases, two captions are found; one on the back of the photograph, and one from the photocopied page in the magazine. In such cases, the caption found on the back of the photograph will be used. If there is no caption on the back of the photograph, the one from the magazine page will be used. Finally, some of the captions are incorrect, and corrections will be given as [SIC:...].

Biographical / Historical
History of DESERT MAGAZINE
DESERT magazine was published in Palm Desert, California, from 1937 to 1985. Randall Henderson was the founder, editor and publisher from 1937 until his retirement in 1958. The magazine focused on the desert country of the southwestern United States: California, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah, and Colorado, with forays into northern Mexico and other areas. The subject matter was wide-ranging: travel, history, mining, geology, human interest, wildlife, river running, exploration, prospecting, all were grist for Henderson's mill. As might be expected, he did a major share of the writing himself, but free-lance articles appeared in each issue as well. DESERT finally ceased publication in 1985. Henderson died in 1981.
