Sumi (Sue) Niiya Takemoto digital photograph collection
Collection
Identifier: P1018
Scope and Contents
Sumi Niiya Takemoto was born and raised in Portland, Oregon. During World War II the Niiya family was interned in the Minidoka Relocation Center (also know as Hunt) in Jerome County, Idaho. Cameras were not permitted in internment camps, but surprisingly, Sumi was allowed to have her camera in camp and took several photographs while interned.
The Sumi Niiya Takemoto photograph collection contains images of Takemoto and her acquaintances during their teenage and early adulthood years (late 1930s - early 1950s). The images range in subject matter and location from groups of friends playing baseball to formal portraits, and from Oregon to Idaho and Utah. The photographs reflect the life of a typical Japanese-American teenager during and after World War II. The Takemoto collection consists entirely of digital scans taken from a scrapbook retained by Takemoto.
