Scope and Contents

This collection contains a few portraits of Max Parkin, his wife, and images of Parkin's family, including George A. Parkin who died during World War II at the age of twenty.

However, the main body of the collection focuses on Mormon or L.D.S. history. This collection contains many images of L.D.S. Church leaders and significant figures, and photographs of major L.D.S. historical sites in New York, Ohio, Missouri, and Salt Lake. Parkin's Masters Thesis is titled, "Conflict at Kirtland." Many photographs in the collection relate to his research and later visits to Kirtland, Ohio. There are also three folders addressing the Strangite, Cutlerite and Hedreckite religions that broke away from the L.D.S. Church after the death of Joseph Smith.

Biographical / Historical

Max H Parkin (1930-2022) was born July 22, 1930 to Kimball Mann Parkin and Florence Hatch. Max attended Davis High School and 1 year at BYU. He served an LDS mission in Hawaii after which he attended the University of Utah, joined the Delta Phi fraternity, and enrolled in the Air Force ROTC to study navigation. However, he was not eligible for service in the Korean War due to color blindness.

In 1954, he married Yvonne Hobberstad of Inglewood, California, in the Salt Lake Temple. Max and Yvonne have five children: Bradford, Kevin, Steven, Christine, and Julie.

After graduating from the University of Utah in marketing and economics, Max was employed by Western Airlines at the old Salt Lake City Airport. Later, in the 1970s through 1980s, he became a teacher at the Salt Lake LDS Institute of Religion at the University of Utah.

Max died on March 23, 2022, in Salt Lake City.

Abstract

The Max H. Parkin photograph collection consists chiefly of images and slides of important persons in the Mormon Church and of Mormon historical sites in New York, Ohio, Missouri, and Utah. Many images are of the area around Kirtland, Ohio. Also included are portrait photographs of Max Parkin and of various members of the Parkin family.
