Scope and Contents

The Donna Toland Smart papers (1846-1888 and 1938-2015) contain correspondence and research files, note cards, diary transcripts, and manuscript drafts. The bulk of the collection is related to Mormon Midwife: The 1846-1888 Diaries of Patty Bartlett Sessions, edited by Smart and published by Utah State University Press in 1997. She has also published works on Perrigrine Sessions and Parley P. Pratt.

Biographical Note

Donna Toland Smart was born on February 2, 1923. Donna Toland married William B. "Bill" Smart; together, the couple had five children. She received a Bachelor’s from the University of Wyoming and a Master of Arts degree in English from the University of Utah in 1981. Smart taught high school in Star Valley, Wyoming, and at East High in Salt Lake City, Utah. She also worked for the University of Utah as a technical writer and served on the Emeritus Board. A member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Smart also worked as an author for the Relief Society. Smart edited Mormon Midwife: The 1846-1888 Diaries of Patty Bartlett Sessions, published in 1997.

Smart received a master's degree in English from the University of Utah in 1981 and worked for the University of Utah as a technical writer. She also taught for several years at East High School and worked with the Relief Society.
