Biographical Sketch
World Figure Skating Judge Ida Shimizu Tateoka began ice-skating as a small child in Los Angeles. To avoid being interned in a relocation camp during World War II, the Shimizu family moved to Utah. Once in Utah, Ida continued her skating career at the first man-made ice rink, Hygeia, which was opened in 1949.
Tateoka joined the Utah Figure Skating Club in the late 1940s and took her skating tests at Broadmore in Colorado Springs, CO. In 1982, Tateoka passed her World Figure Skating test, making her Utah's first World Figure Skating Judge. Ida Tateoka has been a judge at Nationals, Worlds, Olympic Winter Games, and other notable events for the past 20 years. Salt Lake City has hosted the Figure Skating Nationals three times in two decades; several people give credit to Ida Tateoka for this unprecedented honor.
