Historical Note

Zines (short for “magazine”) are self-published, self-distributed, most often handmade booklets on any topic that are a medium of expression for ideas and people who are generally underrepresented in mainstream publishing. Zines are often focused on personal and local issues and provide an insight into the experiences and opinions of many oppressed and marginalized people. Many zines include advice, do-it-yourself guides, and other information on otherwise little known subjects, and many of the zines in this collection are compilation zines (called "compzines") that involve many contributors and artists and bring a wide variety of perspectives on a given theme or topic while others are personal zines (perzines) and offer journal-like looks into the lives of the authors.
