Scope and Contents

The Jerilyn S. McIntyre papers (1845-2015) consist of writings, research materials, teaching materials, administrative and professional materials. The writing materials include manuscript drafts and several articles. The majority of the published materials discussed the Hutchins Commission and the history of mass communication. Included in the collection are the research materials and notes that were collected and used by Dr. McIntyre. The teaching materials include syllabi, lecture notes, examinations, and handouts for courses taught at the University of Washington, University of Iowa, University of Utah and Central Washington University. The collection also contains the professional and academic career materials mainly focused on Dr. McIntyre's career at the University of Utah.

Biographical Note

Jerilyn Sue McIntyre was born on June 24, 1942, to Frank Otto and Maxine (Ward) McIntyre. She attended Stanford University, receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in history in 1964. The following year she acquired a Master of Arts degree in journalism from Stanford. From 1965 to 1967, she worked as a correspondent for McGraw-Hill Publishing Company at their World News Bureau in Los Angeles. In 1968, after obtaining a teaching certificate, she was hired as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mass Communications at Chico State College in California. In 1973 she attained a Ph.D. in Communications from the University of Washington and later the same year, took a position as Assistant Professor in the School of Journalism at the University of Iowa. Dr. McIntyre remained there until 1977, when she was hired as Associate Professor in the Department of Communications at the University of Utah. While at the University of Utah, she served as Associate Dean of the College of Humanities from 1984 to 1988, Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs from 1988-1990, Vice President for Academic Affairs from 1990-1998, and briefly as interim President in 1991 and for the entire year of 1997. Dr. McIntyre became President of Central Washington University in the summer of 2000. She is the first woman to have served in any of these administrative positions at the University of Utah and Central Washington University. Dr. McIntyre is the author of numerous monographs, articles, and papers on communication history, journalism ethics, and higher education issues. She is married to W. David Smith.

McIntyre is president emerita of Central Washington University and also holds emerita status as interim President, Vice President for Academic Affairs, and professor of communication at the University of Utah.
