Scope and Contents

The Harry Haines papers (1890s-1910s) contain an assortment of political cartoons, which Haines drew and submitted Salt Lake Tribune while employed there in the late 1890s. Among other topics, this collection includes several cartoons profiling the longstanding dispute between George Q. Cannon and Moses Thatcher.

Biographical Note

Harry Haines was born in Zanesville, Ohio in 1877. A gifted artist, he joined the Salt Lake Tribune's art department in his late teens or early twenties. Haines' promising career was, however, cut short in 1901 when he succumbed to a chronic lung and kidney illness.
