Scope and Contents

The John Hubbard Noakes deed (1857) documents Noakes' signing over ownership of his property and possessions to Brigham Young and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). The deed was written at a time in LDS Church history when the head of each family was asked to convey all personally owned property to the LDS Church. The LDS Church in turn conveyed some portion of the property back to the head of the family as a personal stewardship. It has been estimated that around forty percent of the 7,000 heads of families in the Utah territory filled out a consecration deed between 1855 and 1857. The original document is located in the Special Collections safe.
