Scope and Contents
The Lex Hemphill papers (1924-2004), document the various stages of Hemphill's career with the Salt Lake Tribune. The bulk of his papers contain his Olympic Games research and notes. Included are many media guides from each of the Olympic Games held between 1988 and 2002. Also included in his papers is a complete set of the Sydney Herald from the 2000 Summer Games held in Sydney. The collection also includes complete sets of on-site dailies newspapers published during the Atlanta, Sydney, and Salt Lake City Olympics

Biographical Sketch
Lex Hemphill (1949- ), was a sports columnist for the Salt Lake Tribune. He first started with the Salt Lake Tribune in 1976 and retired in 2002. Throughout his career he has been recognized with many awards and honors. His career is notable for his extensive coverage of the Utah Jazz (as the Salt Lake Tribune's first Utah Jazz beat writer) and for his coverage of the Olympic Games. From 1991-2000 he was an editorial writer focusing on environmental and public-land issues for the Salt Lake Tribune. His editorials described the Utah wilderness debate extensively, especially the formation of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument by President Clinton. From 2000-2002 he became a full-time Olympic beat writer for the Salt Lake Tribune in preparation for and culmination with the Salt Lake Olympic Winter Games of 2002.

Abstract
The Lex Hemphill papers (1924-2004) contain documents and research relating to his twenty-five-year career as a sports columnist with the Salt Lake Tribune. His papers consist of documents, research files, interview notes, and legal research pertaining to the controversial issues in Utah, the Olympics, professional and collegiate sports, and environmental and wilderness issues.
