Scope and Contents

The Stephen Gary Erickson papers consists of correspondence, notes, financial materials, research materials, newsletters, pamphlets, publications, and news clippings. The bulk of the collection contains information about the resistance effort against the U.S. government's creation, testing, storage, and use of nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons of mass destruction in Utah and the Inter-mountain West which occurred from 1980-2000. The collection particularly consists of Erickson's work as an activist, lobbyist and community organizer with the non-profit agencies Downwinders and Western Solidarity.

Biographical Note

Stephen Gary Erickson (1953-) is a community activist for peace and justice. He graduated from the University of Utah in 1977 with a B.A. in English and Anthropology. Upon graduation, Erickson was extensively involved in the anti-nuclear movement during the height of the Cold War and Arms Race in the 1980s.

Abstract

The Stephen Gary Erikson papers (1957-2016) contain materials documenting Erickson's activities in opposition to the manufacture, testing, and storage of weapons of mass destruction in Utah and the Intermountain West. Included are correspondence, financial records, pamphlets, publications, news clippings, and maps. The bulk of the materials relate to Erickson's work with the non-profit organizations Downwinders and Western Solidarity. The Stephen Gary Erikson papers also contain materials relating to organizations and involvements such as Crossroads Urban Center, the Utah Alcoholism Foundation, affordable housing, as well as various environmental projects throughout the West.
