Historical Note

The Daria Book Club was organized in January 1955. The club had originally been formed in 1951 as the Aurora chapter of the Delphinian Society, a Chicago-based organization dedicated to promoting education and personal development for women by providing a course of study and guidelines for conducting seminars on the materials provided. By the time the Aurora chapter's charter expired in 1954, attendance had fallen dramatically, and the remaining members decided to investigate other courses of study. The group chose to begin a course on Great Books offered through the University of Utah Extension Division. The name "Daria" was selected, from a Persian word meaning "one who seeks knowledge." The first season of the Daria club was conducted under the auspices of Professors James Jarrett and Donald Heiney, with readings which included selections from Shakespeare, Plato, Thoreau, Voltaire, Wordsworth, Ibsen, Flaubert, and Freud.
