Historical Note
The idea of having a radio station in Utah began with Elias S. Woodruff, then business manager of The Deseret News, in the early 1920s. He consulted with the paper's general manager, Horace G. Whitney, on the subject but was turned down. In time, Woodruff succeeded Whitney as general manager which allowed him to pursue his radio idea. He spent the next several months traveling to various cities around the United States and corresponding with several people to acquire the necessary components needed to build a radio station. On May 6, 1922, KZN "sent out the first broadcast in Utah at Salt Lake City, from a shack on the roof of the building occupied by The Deseret News."
