Scope and Contents

The John Weisheit papers (1871-1992) contain a copy of a manuscript for a book on Cataract Canyon, as well as research materials related to Cataract Canyon, the Grand Canyon, the Green River, and other notable Western rivers. Also included are research materials pertaining to notable river runners such as Georgie White, Otis "Dock" Marston, John Wesley Powell, and others.

Biographical Note

John Weisheit was born in 1954 in Los Angeles, California. After growing up in Whittier California and Phoenix Arizona, he moved to Moab Utah in 1987. He married Susette Renea DeCoster in 1990. Both are currently employed as Wilderness Guides for Tag-A-Long Expeditions. Their region of specialty is southeastern Utah. Weisheit's great passion is the Colorado River and he has spent much time researching it. He uses the information for writing articles and to teach tour groups. In addition to his guide job, he serves on non-profit boards such as the Canyonlands Field Institute and the Colorado Plateau River Guides. He is currently writing a book on Cataract Canyon with Dr. Robert H. Webb and Dr. Jayne Belnap of the U.S. Geological Service. The focus of the book is the biological, geological, and human history of Cataract Canyon.
