The Hyrum B. Calder papers (1895-1898) [photocopies and transcripts] contain a data sheet, missionary journal, personal journal, and a photocopied picture of the Presidency of the European mission of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The collection deals mostly with the period when Hyrum served his mission to Scotland.

Biographical Note

Hyrum B. Calder was born 26 May 1873 in Millcreek, Utah. When he was 23, Hyrum left Salt Lake for a mission in Scotland. He return to Salt Lake in 1898. In 1900 he married Agnes Ellen Hamilton in the Salt Lake Temple. They moved to Vernal, Utah, and there Hyrum and his brother, Pontha, founded the Calder Brothers Company. Hyrum was active in local and state politics. From 1931 to 1936 he was the mayor of Vernal. During that time he also was a state senator for Uintah and Duchesne counties. Hyrum was ordained as Bishop of the Vernal Ward in 1910 and served for seventeen years. After he was released as Bishop, he was called as President of the Vernal Stake and served until 1944. He died in 1946.

Hyrum Calder spent most of his life in Vernal, Utah. He served as both mayor of Vernal and a state senator from 1931 to 1936.
