Biographical Sketch

Alice Morrey Bailey (1903-1997) was born on 21 August 1903 in St. Joseph, Utah, to Laura Rawlinson and John Ferney Morrey. She married Ralph DeWitt Bailey on 4 January 1925. After Ralph was critically injured in a mining accident in 1941, Alice became the breadwinner of the family as well as nursing her husband until his death in 1972. In spite of her heavy family responsibilities, Alice sketched, sculpted, and wrote numerous short stories, plays, and poems. Her book of poems entitled Rain Shadows (1995) was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. She was active in the LDS Church and wrote for many church publications. She was also active in the League of Utah Writers, the Association for Mormon Letters, and the National League of American Pen Women. She died in Salt Lake City on 20 February 1997.
