Scope and Contents

The Robert S. Portlock article (1997) is entitled, "Joseph Smith as Latter-day Halcyon: Spiritual Mythology and Mormon Symbolism" which is a 22-page document, written by Gail L. Porritt and Robert S. Portlock The first section, "Mythological Motifs in the Life of the Prophet," is based on the authors' desire to include "mythological motif patterns" in the study of Joseph Smith and Mormonism, and provides a "sampling of curious parallels between the historical life of Joseph Smith, Jr. and ancient mythology as presented primarily by three respected twentieth-century scholars, Hugh Nibley, Robert Graves and Mircea Eliade." The second section, "New Vistas," is an article, "What Is a Prophet?" that discusses emerging historical perspectives on Joseph Smith, Jr. The document concludes with a bibliography of writings on ancient religion, mythology, and LDS theology.
