Scope and Contents

The Stevenson family papers (1908-1994) contains typescript poetry (1989-1994) by Virginia Grosvenor Stevenson Allee, and a news article, "Summer Solstice Brings Out Pictograph Watchers" (circa 1987), by Betsy Bailey Green that was published in the Emery County Progress. Also present is "A Family Report," by Virginia Allee, an illustrated genealogical and historical account (1974 and 1982), as is a tribute to Allee's grandfather, Clarence Stevenson, Sr., concerning improvements to the Independent Coal and Coke Company of Kenilworth, Utah, that was published in the Carbon County News (June 26, 1908) and was written by state coal mine inspector J. E. Pettit. These documents are all photocopies.

Biographical Sketch

Clarence Henry Stevenson, Sr., (1866-1935) was the son of Nicholas Henry Stevenson and Clara Grosvenor. He married Elizabeth West on March 16, 1892. He had a role in the development of early Colorado and Utah coal mining. He worked as a day laborer at the Rouse Mine of the Colorado Fuel and Iron Company, later becoming master mechanic and superintendent of machinery for all company mines. He moved to Utah to become general superintendent for the Independent Coal and Coke Company in Kenilworth, Utah. After moving to Price, Utah, he founded the C. H. Stevenson Lumber and Hardware Company. Over the years, he and his wife acquired an significant collection of Indian artifacts, which were eventually donated to the Southwest Museum in Los Angeles, California.
