Jean and Wilburn Pickett papers
Collection
Identifier: ACCN 1573
Scope and Contents
The Jean and Wilburn Pickett papers (1961-1998) contain correspondence, entry applications, score cards, news clippings, posters, trail maps, brochures, and editions of the Alta Powder News, detailing both the history of Alta, Utah, and Alta's Gelande ski jump competitions as well as other intermountain ski racing and jumping events. Wilburn (1924-1983) and Jean (1926-1998) Pickett began their association with Alta Ski Area in the 1960s when Wilburn began publishing Alta Powder News and Jean began providing secretarial services for the annual National Gelande ski jump competition at Alta. When Wilburn passed away in 1983, Jean became the editor and chief writer for the newsletter. The collection is divided into three parts: alphabetical files, editions of the Alta Powder News, and materials on the annual Gelande competition. The alphabetical files contain materials about Alta Ski Area, photocopied editions of The Salt Lake Mining Review, and photocopies of John Lund's transcribed interviews with Alta miners. The original titles and order of the folders have been maintained. The collection of Alta Powder News editions cover the years 1982 to 1998. Issues of particular interest are seventy-seven which highlights the Engen family and eighty-seven and ninety-one which chronicle Alta's history. The Gelande materials consist of score cards, entry applications, and correspondence with sponsors of the Gelande, a competition performed in alpine ski equipment in which the contestant is judged both on jump distance and on his ability to hold a tucked position with his arms extended for the jump's duration.
