Organizational History

The Mineralogical Society of Utah (MSU) held its first meeting 4 February 1939, in the geology building on the campus of the University of Utah. The society was founded by Dr. Bronson Stringham, professor of mineralogy at the University. He envisioned a studious group of townspeople and students coming together to facilitate the further study of mineralogy. The membership grew quite large as many faculty members of the geology department brought friends and students from outside the university. The group held meetings once a month and also had a field trip monthly.
