Scope and Contents

The John W. Summerhays Papers consists mainly of records and publications from Summerhays' time in the U.S. Army. There are a number of manuals and regulations related to the Selective Service, which Summerhays helped to coordinate. Summerhays was stationed in Europe during World War I and collected a sizable number of European postcards, both used and blank, which are included in the collection. Also included are a small number of clippings and other items commemorating Summerhays' opera singing career.

Biographical Note

John W. Summerhays (1890-1980) was a United States Army Lt. Colonel who lived in Utah for much of his life. He served in World War I, and also in World War II as a coordinator for the Selective Service in Utah, and in occupied Japan during 1947-1948. He received a bachelor degree in military science from the University of Utah in 1956. Summerhays performed as a tenor with various amateur and professional opera groups throughout his life, and taught music at Granite High School for 17 years. Summerhays married Jane Carter (1902-1992), and was father to their 7 children.

Abstract

The John W. Summerhays (1890-1980) papers consist mainly of military records and publications related to the United States Army and the Selective Service. The collection also contains a limited amount of materials concerning Summerhays' civilian life. Also included is a sizeable European postcard collection from the 1910s.
