Organizational History
The Salt Lake Oratorio Society was incorporated in June 1914. Squire Coop, University of Utah Music Department chairman, was the driving force behind the society for many years. The society gave its first rendition of the Messiah in 1915 and it became an annual tradition thereafter. Performances were first broadcast via radio and television in 1929 and 1956, respectively. The 1960s saw performances broadcast internationally. A history of the society, written by Marcus S. Smith and titled With Them Were Ten Thousand and More (1989), is available.
