Biographical Sketch

Pete Gardner was born 17 January 1927 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He attended the University of Utah, majoring in Organic Chemistry. He received his B.S. in 1949. Pete remained at the University to receive his Masters degree in 1950 and Doctorate in 1953 in Organic Chemistry. He moved on to the University of Texas and taught Chemistry there for 12 years. At the University of Texas, he advanced through the ranks of the faculty as an Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, before being made a full professor in 1962. During his tenure, the student body at the University of Texas voted Gardner as an Outstanding Professor. In 1965, he returned to the University of Utah as a Professor of Chemistry. He was appointed as a dean for Science in the college of Letters and Science in 1968 and later as the dean of the College of Science in 1972. In 1973, David P. Gardner appointed his as Academic Affairs Vice President and he spent four years in that position. After 1977, Pete returned to full-time teaching and research. During his career, he published over 70 articles in Chemistry and other science journals. In Autumn 1988, he contracted cancer and retired from the University of Utah. He died 4 February 1989.

The Pete D. Gardner papers (1953-1988) contain journal articles, memos, letters, calendars, a lab notebook, speeches, course evaluations, grant applications, and satire articles from journals. Gardner was a professor of chemistry and biology and Vice President for Academic Affairs at the University of Utah.
