Scope and Contents
The Herbert J. Foulger diary [photocopy and typescript] (1886) was kept by Foulger (1848-1920) while serving time in the Utah State Penitentiary for polygamy. Every entry describes the weather, the time he arose and retired, visitors, and daily activities. In addition, many entries tell of "fresh fish," newly arrived bretheren, inspirational meetings, Sunday services, convictions, sentences, and escapes.

Biographical Sketch
Born 10 January 1848 in Islington, London, England, Herbert John Foulger arrived in Utah in October 1863 with the Daniel D. McArthur company. Twenty-two years later, on 31 October 1885, he was arrested on a charge of unlawful cohabitation when the United States government enforcement of the Edmunds law was underway. He was sentenced in February 1886 to six months imprisonment and a $300 fine. He was held in the penitentiary until 2 September 1886. A carpenter, builder, and wholesale grocer, Foulger was the superintendent of the 20th Ward co-op, a bishop's counselor in the 21st Ward, and a member of the High Council in the Ensign Stake. He married Eliza Mary Hazel in 1871 and died in 1920.

Abstract

The diary contains a record of his daily activities and the routine and occasional unusual events involving other "bretheren" incarcerated with him.
