Scope and Contents

The Sarah Maria Mousley Cannon diary [typescript] (circa 1857) consist of an overland diary relating a journey from Philadelphia to Salt Lake City via Iowa. The diary opens with a poetic and religious description of home, but daily entries begin as the family starts along the Oregon Trail. The diary was owned by Elizabeth Silver Clawson who states it was written by Sarah Maria Mousley, later married to Angus M. Cannon.

Biographical Sketch

Sarah Maria Mousley and her family left Philadelphia with other LDS members headed for the Salt Lake Valley. Her family joined the company of Jacob Hawfines and traveled overland by ox-drawn wagon. She later married Angus M. Cannon.
