Scope and Contents

The collection contains eight boxes. Material pertaining to the 1947 Utah Centennial Commission is located in boxes 1-3. In addition to correspondence and munutes, there are reports of the Art, Drama, Pageant, Music, and Parade sub-committees. Smoot served as chairman of the Art Committee. Centennial programs are found in box 3. Information about the Utah Postmasters Association, the NAPUS conventions of 1935 and 1938, and a report of the legislative committee of 1938 regarding civil service are found in box 4. Correspondence with William McCarthy, editor of The Postmaster's Gazette, 1936 through 1942, is located in box 5; correspondence from 1936 through 1950 regarding the activities and responsibilities of Smoot's position as postmaster as well as his service as NAPUS vice president and, in 1948, as president are located in boxes 5-8.

Biographical Sketch

Isaac Albert Smoot (known as I.A. Smoot or "Bert" Smoot) was born in 1880 in Provo, Utah. At the time of his death in 1957 he was presiding over the Northern States Mission of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Abstract

The Isaac Albert Smoot papers (1935-1950) consists of correspondence, minutes, and reports of the 1947 Utah Centennial Commission of which Smoot was a member. As well as correspondence and reports during Smoot's tenure as U.S. Postmaster for Salt Lake City and as an officer in the National Association of Postmasters of the United States (NAPUS), 1935 to 1950.
