Historical Note

Barrick Resources, headquartered in Toronto, Canada, purchased the Mercur Mine from Texaco in 1985. It had been part of Getty Oil, a company acquired a year earlier by Texaco. Annual mine output of 80,000 ounces of gold made Barrick one of the major gold producers of North America. Process improvements introduced by the new owner increased output to an estimated 140,000 ounces in 1986. Gold Standard Inc. of Salt Lake City, holder of a large tract of land at the south end of the Oquirrh Mountains that included the Mercur mine, held a joint venture interest in the earnings of the mine. Adnan Khashoggi, notable for his participation in Salt Lake City's Triad Center and International Center, was an investor in and a director of Barrick Resources.
